Natural Treatments of Prostate Disorders Have Shown Tremendous Success!

If you are familiar with conventional treatments for prostate disorders and are interested in finding out more about gentler, safer, more natural remedies to heal your prostate condition, you have will find some solutions here.

Research has shown that there are safe, non-drug, non-surgical natural remedies that work every bit as effectively as prescription drugs in healing common prostate conditions. There have been many articles about the healing power of saw palmetto and how it can help heal even the most enlarged prostate. Additionally, there are two other very powerful, and highly effective healing herbs proven to heal an enlarged prostate (BPH) or prostatitis, as effectively as prescription drugs.

Stinging Nettle Root (Urtica dioica) An herb that grows wild in the United States, stinging nettle has been shown to have a highly therapeutic effect on the prostate gland. Like pygeum, urtica dioica contains phytosterols that exert a powerful anti-inflammatory effect on prostate tissue. Scientists have found that Urtica dioica works synergistically with pygeum. In fact, doctors in Europe commonly prescribe a Urtica/Pygeum combination for patients who suffer from prostate disorders.

In a recent study using a combination of pygeum and urtica dioica, of the 2,080 patients suffering from BPH, a vast majority of the patients showed marked improvement in their symptoms by the end of the study (Schneider, 1995). Another study conducted by the Department of Clinical Pharmacology of Tokyo College of Pharmacy in Japan (Hirano, 1994) investigated the effect of Urtica dioica on BPH tissue. The conclusion was that stinging nettle root inhibited certain activity in the prostate to suppress prostate cell metabolism and growth.

Julian Whitaker, M.D., a well-known physician and critic of currently established medical practices, says our government "continuously and irresponsibly ignores the findings of these superior botanical supplements" and has "jumped into bed with the drug companies." Michael Murray, N.D., a leading researcher in the field of natural medicine and coauthor of the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, illustrates the fallacy of assuming that drugs are the only answer for treating prostate problems. In Health Counselor magazine he reports that numerous studies on the saw palmetto extract have shown it to be effective in nearly 90 percent of patients, usually in a period of four to six weeks. In contrast, the drug, Proscar, is effective in reducing the symptoms in less than 37 percent after taking the drug for one year! Murray states, "Clearly, the saw palmetto extract is superior to Proscar. Although Proscar has received much attention, based on the clinical trials, it is much less effective than the extract of saw palmetto berries. Less than 37 percent of patients on Proscar will experience clinical improvement after taking the drug for one year and it must be taken for at least six months before any improvement can be expected."

Micronized Progesterone USP Progesterone prevents the body from converting testosterone to di-hydro testosterone (DHT). It does this by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. When a male's progesterone decreases with age, 5-alpha reductase converts to DHT which is useless at removing the prostate cancer cells that estradiol stimulates. Estradiol also stimulates the enlargement of the prostate.

There is strong biochemical evidence to support the recommendation for men's use of progesterone. The January 28th JAMA1 had an article "To die or not to die?" According to this article, most cells in the body die through the more subtle, non-inflammatory, energy-dependent form of cell death called apoptosis. Recent research into the molecular mechanism of apoptosis has revealed that it is a genetically programmed process that can become deranged when there is a mutation in this process. Dysregulation of apoptosis is associated with the cause of a wide array of diseases: cancer, neurodegeneration, autoimmunity, heart disease, and other disorders. The article clearly shows that traditional chemotherapy using poisons to stop cell hyperplasia do not work as they kill normal cells easier than cancer cells. The new idea promoted by the review is to find agents that activate p53 and deactivate bc12 is the hope of curing cancer. Guess what? Estradiol turns on the cancer gene bc12 and Progesterone turns on the anti-cancer gene p53. Progesterone, like testosterone is an anabolic hormone, meaning that it helps burn fat for energy. Thus, it helps keep men from becoming obese. With less body fat, there is less endogenous (within the body) estrone production.

Men with BPH (swelling of the prostate) and other male related problems will appreciate the speed of relief with progesterone cream. Dr. Lee recommends that men use 8 - 12 mg of progesterone daily.
Progesterone has NO feminizing characteristics.
Progesterone is an 5-alpha reductase inhibitor -- it helps prevent the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Progesterone may also help men with complexion and increased energy.
Progesterone balances the estrogens that build in a man's body.
Furthermore, it may be important in the prevention and/or treatment of prostatism and prostate cancer. Dr Lee has had men contact him telling him that as a result of applying progesterone cream to their wife they were seeing that their symptoms of prostatism such as urinary urgency and frequency decreased considerably. Several men with prostate cancer reported that their PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) level decreased and they have had no progression of their prostate lesions since using the cream themselves.
Another man contacted Dr Lee to say his bone metastases are now no longer visible by Mayo Clinic X-ray tests. After reviewing endocrinology books in regard to hormone changes in older men Dr Lee found that progesterone levels drop, estradiol levels rise, and testosterone changes in form in older men. This is significant enough to warrant research to determine if the application of progesterone can be used to prevent prostrate cancer.
Dr Lee has pointed to research that suggests that too much progesterone in men can prevent sperm maturation possibly acting as a contraceptive. Since both progesterone and testosterone work to build new bone, progesterone can be useful for castrated men (common procedure for prostate cancer) in protecting against osteoporosis as in women.

This suggests that research should be done to determine whether the fall in progesterone is primary to the other changes. Unfortunately, such research has aparently not been done. If it were true that falling progesterone synthesis by the testes preceded either prostate hypertrophy or prostate cancer, then a trial of natural progesterone cream in men might show that it prevents these conditions.

L-Alanine, L-Glycine & L-Glutamic Acid Amino Acid Therapy for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BHP) has shown for decades to be a successful treatment for this disorder. Specifically the combination Alanine, Glycine and Glutamic Acid appear to have a direct link with prostate problems such as prostate enlargement and frequent urination. In a double blind study to quantify this link, a mixture of these three amino acids was given to half the men in a group of BHP sufferers. A placebo (inert sugar pill) was given to the other half.

Results showed that within the group taking the amino acids:

While the exact method of action is not fully understood, it is thought that, like other nutritional and herbal supplements, the formula works through a diuretic and anti-edemic effect, reducing swelling of the prostate and surrounding tissues and encouraging normal urine flow.

How Does Saw Palmetto Work?

To understand how saw palmetto works, it's important to have a basic understanding of what causes the prostate gland to become enlarged in the first place. It's widely believed that the primary culprit that causes prostate enlargement is a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This is a derivative of testosterone that causes the prostate tissue to grow abnormally large. An increase in the production of DHT begins to occur in men with age (usually after 45).

Research has revealed that the extract of the saw palmetto berry contains very powerful compounds. These compounds found hidden in saw palmetto berry extract consist of fatty acids, and phytosterols (plant sterols). These compounds combat prostate disorders in three unique ways: 1. They inhibit the production of DHT. 2. They inhibit the binding of DHT to androgen receptors in the prostate cells. 3. They block the effect of estrogen on prostate tissue (acts as an aromatase inhibitor).

Clinical Studies Prove Saw Palmetto's Effectiveness

In Treating BPH Over the last decade, there have been over 20 double-blind, placebo controlled clinical studies documenting the safety and effectiveness of saw palmetto as a treatment for an enlarged prostate. In fact, several of these studies have proven that saw palmetto extract is superior to the prescription drug finesteride (Proscar) commonly used to treat BPH. In a recent clinical study published in the journal Phytomedicine, of the 309 men (all suffering from an enlarged prostate) who were treated with saw palmetto extract experienced a 50% decrease in residual urine volume (left over urine in the bladder). In comparison, the prescription drug Proscar showed only a 30% decrease in symptom scores. In another study, 305 men with BPH were treated with 320 mg of saw palmetto daily. After 45 days of treatment, 83% of the patients showed a significant improvement in urinary flow, residual urinary volume and prostate size. After 90 days, the treatment was deemed effective for an astonishing 88% of the patients. Another important finding from this study was that there was no demonstrable effect on PSA levels. This is significant since PSA levels are considered an important guideline in detecting prostate cancer. Treatment using the prescription drug finesteride (Proscar) is known to reduce PSA levels, but experts agree that artificially lowering PSA levels can mask detection of prostate cancer.

Studies Documenting An Even More Powerful Saw Palmetto Combination

In one ground breaking study reported in the Journal of American Botanical Council and Herb Research Foundation , scientists gave patients a combination of saw palmetto extract and nettle root extract for a 12 week period. When the study was complete, the patients taking this herbal combination reduced their frequent nighttime urination (nocturia) by a stunning 50%!
